Donald W. Black, M.D., a professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa explains, “Antisocial” isn’t the best word to describe the disorder because it’s often associated with being shy. The term arose because the disorder is anti-society. It’s behavior that’s directed against society” (Tartakovsky).
Clerkley (1976) identified the following 8 characteristics of someone with APD
1. Superficial charm and good intelligence
2. Poise, rationality, and absence of neurotic anxiety
3. Lack of a sense of personal responsibility
4. Untruthfulness, insecurity, callousness, and manipulativeness
5. Antisocial behavior without regret or shame
6. Poor judgement and failure to learn from experience
7. Inability to establish lasting, close relationships with others
8. Lack of insight into personal motivations
